Activision Blizzard Accepts Raven Software QA's Union, Set To Begin Negotiations

Following a recent union victory for members of Raven Software’s 27-person quality assurance team, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick states the company is recognizing the union and is set to begin good faith negotiations.

Accepting the union (called the Game Worker’s Alliance) and heading to the table to hash out a collective bargaining agreement is what Activision Blizzard is required to do by law following Raven QA’s successful union drive with the Communication Workers of America. Once at the table, contract negotiations can often be quite lengthy, which Kotick makes a point of mentioning in a letter sent to all Activision Blizzard’s US employees.

“While first labor contracts can take some time to complete, we will meet CWA leaders at the bargaining table and work toward an agreement that supports the success of all our employees, that further strengthens our commitment to create the industry’s best, most welcoming and inclusive workplace, and enhances our ability to deliver world class games for our players,” Kotick’s letter reads.

Activision Blizzard failed to voluntarily recognize the formation of the Game Worker’s Alliance in January, which prompted Raven’s QA employees to petition the National Labor Relations Board. Activision Blizzard then sought to make it so that any unionization efforts at Raven would need to include the entire company, rather than just QA, which would have greatly decreased the union’s likelihood of succeeding. The NLRB eventually ruled Raven QA was a suitable group for unionization.

Kotick spends the rest of his letter outlining the various “major investments” Activision Blizzard has made in its QA employees “over the past couple years,” like converting over 1,000 part-time, US based QA employees to full-time positions and integrating QA “more seamlessly into the game development process.” Kotick does not mention that those changes only came about following QA-related strikes at multiple Activision Blizzard studios (including Raven), that recent QA pay increases didn’t apply to Raven Software QA members looking to unionize, or that “integrating” QA into the development process was largely seen as a means of breaking up Raven QA employees who wanted to organize.

Raven Software’s QA team, which primarily works on Call of Duty: Warzone, began looking to unionize following a nearly two-month-long strike in December 2021, demanding 12 recently laid off Raven QA employees be re-hired. During that time, striking employees claimed Activision Blizzard leadership went “radio silent” when it came to meeting with striking workers. The union drive also came amidst ongoing investigations and controversies revolving around a state of California lawsuit alleging a “frat boy” culture of sexual harassment and discrimination at Activision Blizzard.

Activision Blizzard’s recognition of Raven Software QA’s union comes as Microsoft (which is set to acquire Activision Blizzard in a $69 billion deal) announced it would be taking a new approach to unions moving forward, recognizing “that there may be times when some employees in some countries may wish to join or form a union” and that Microsoft would seek to make it “simpler, rather than more difficult” for employees to exercise their legal right to join or form a union. Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition is expected to close later this year, pending regulatory approval.

Time to give the devil his due once again as Charlie Cox will don the horned helm of Daredevil in the upcoming Echo series on Disney+, THR is reporting. Cox made his surprise return to Marvel in Spider-Man: No Way Home, cementing his role as attorney/superhero Matt Murdock aka Daredevil, carrying over from the Netflix show that debuted in 2015.

“If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil,” Feige told CinemaBlend back in December. “Where we see that, how we see that, when we see that, remains to be seen.”

The report is also stating that Cox won’t be coming alone. Joining Cox will be Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his role as Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. D’Onofrio made his proper MCU appearance back in Hawkeye, but will finally be reunited with his old adversary.

HBO Max Orders The Real Magic Mike, An Unscripted Series About Getting Nude

HBO Max has given the green light to an unscripted competition series with the working title The Real Magic Mike, according to a release. The reality series is currently conducting a nationwide casting search, and is expected to debut on the streaming service later this year.

As the name suggests, the series is a spiritual companion to the 2012 film Magic Mike and its 2015 sequel Magic Mike XXL–both loosely based on the experiences of actor Channing Tatum, who was an 18-year-old stripper in Tampa, Florida. So, it’s only appropriate that Tatum and the producers behind the Magic Mike franchise are bringing about “an exhilarating and sexy series that will transform a group of men into real-life Magic Mikes.”

The show will feature “10 men who have ‘lost their magic'” as they “bare their souls… evolve their bodies, learn to perform spectacular routines, and develop a new level of self-confidence.” Although casting is not yet even complete and it’s unknown who will star, th…
